A new nose for an old hose Sammy had a makeover recently to bring his appearance in line with waterwise practices and current water restrictions. Sammy is modelled on a garden hose and previously sported a "standard nozzle" nose. We welcome Sammy back with his new and improved "trigger nozzle" nose - you can see the trigger on the back of his head. |

World Water Day - 22 March 2008
2008 is the International Year of Sanitation. Sanitation means having clean water and toilets to keep people healthy. 2.6 billion people do not have clean toilets to use, and 5,000 children die every day from diseases caused by a lack of sanitation. That's equivalent to 20 jumbo jets crashing every day.
For World Water Day, members of Sammy's Waterwise Club were invited to SPEND A PENNY* and improve sanitation around the world by raising funds for WaterAid. WaterAid is an international not-for-profit organisation dedicated to providing developing countries with access to clean water, adequate sanitation, and hygiene education for the world's poorest people. You can learn more here
Western Water would like to thank the Sammy Club members who participated. A total of $271 was collected for WaterAid by the Club. Congratulations to our top fundraisers, Billy from Gisborne, Max from Melton, and Asha-Mae from Woodend, who all received prize packs.
A little effort can make a big difference in the developing world: $2 can buy equipment to build a clean toilet; and $30 can provide a person with access to safe water, effective sanitation and hygiene education.
*150 years ago, public toilets in London only opened when a coin (a penny or about 1 cent) was placed in a slot. People would say, "I'm off to spend a penny" when they went to the toilet.
Sammy's Website Challenge - CLOSED 31 October 2007
