Western Water is subject to strict government regulation and close scrutiny in our management of water quality.
Our water supply comes from surface water storages, such as reservoirs and basins, or from groundwater. Due to the impact of prolonged drought on water storages, we source the majority of our water from a Yarra entitlement, drawing on Melbourne Water sources to supplement supply.
Melbourne Water is sourced from protected natural catchments (Upper Yarra Thomson Catchments and the Yarra Valley tributaries) and transferred from the Silvan Reservoir to the Greenvale Reservoir and then pumped to supply Western Water customers.

Monitoring To assess the quality of our water supplies, daily routine monitoring is undertaken, validating our compliance with the Safe Drinking Water Legislation. Water samples are collected in each of our 18 water quality zones, at the reservoir, water filtration plants and various points throughout the supply system, including water storage tanks and customer taps. The samples are tested for a range of microbiological, physical, chemical, algal and radiological parameters. All testing is undertaken through an independent laboratory accredited by the National Authority of Testing Association (NATA). |

The Department of Human Services Drinking Water Regulatory Unit regulates the safety of drinking water supplied by all Victorian water corporations.
In addition to meeting the standards for the seven parameters in the Safe Drinking Water Legislation, Western Water also aims to ensure that the water provided to customers meets the Australian Drinking Water Guidelines 2004 (ADWG 2004). These guidelines provide a benchmark for a large range of biological, physical and chemical parameters and also detail the use and development of Western Water's Drinking Water Risk Management Plan.
